Amazing Artists' Concerts: Saturday, June 27, 2009
An Amazing Concert: 6 Performances by 30 Amazing Artists

As part of the Official Opening Festivities, Amazing Coffee will, on Saturday, June 27, be running (and partly sponsoring) the day-long concert of Folk, Roots and Classical music on the outdoor stage of the new Arts Centre. All concerts are part of the Opening Weekend Festivities at Centre Hastings Arts Centre in Centre Hastings Park. There’s something for everyone.

There will be no admission charge. We will pass the hat for donations between sets. All excess money, after the Artists have been paid, will be used to fund future Amazing Artists events.

The show will go on, rain or shine. So bring your lawn chair, some snacks and (hopefully won’t need it!) your umbrella.

1:00 - 2:30 p.m. The Marigolds

The MarigoldsThree of Canada’s top singer/songwriters combine their talents for an unforgettable performance. Gwen Swick, Suzie Vinnick & Caitlin Hanford. Part bluesy, part jazzy and part country these three brilliant performers deliver angelic harmonies and a riveting performance. As solo artists—and with their other ensembles—each member of The Marigolds has performed in concert from coast to coast, at folk festivals, on radio and on television. As well, they each have solo recordings.

2:30 - 4:00 p.m. Washboard Hank

Washboard HankWant to laugh, dance and whoop it up as much as the kids? Then join a child to see Washboard Hank! The man has licence plates and duck calls strapped to his chest, and a percussion hard-hat on his head.  He plays the banjo and a plumbing-tuba (with a kitchen sink for a bell) at the same time. A talented musician and performer, Washboard Hank has to be seen AND heard to be believed.

4:00 - 5:30 p.m. Sarah Noni Metzner

Sarah Noni MetznerThe sounds and words of Sarah Noni Metzner create an unlikely musical concoction. Equal parts grit and glamour, soul and silk, tattoos and mandolins, her work is a magical-realist mix of cabaret, folk, rock and pop. A multi-instrumentalist with a dynamic voice, Metzner performs music that contains acoustic, electric, and sometimes subtle electronic elements. Fresh back from her 2009 European Tour, Sarah Noni Metzner’s performance is a “must-see” for all ages.

5:30 - 7:00 p.m. Classical Dinnertime: Gabriella Hamley & The Carpe Diem Ensemble

Carpe Diem has been described as "a jewel that is wonderful to hear". This 20 member string ensemble, based in Marmora, draws players from a wide area including Belleville, Trenton, Stirlling, Marmora, Campbellford, Norwood, Tweed and Peterborough.

Their music is an eclectic mix of styles from classics to jazz to show tunes and includes original compositions and arrangements by member George Danes. Under the enthusiastic direction of Gabriella Hamley of the Hamley Music School they perform at community events, weddings and festivals. Their performance at the new Arts Centre will feature music from the movies including Ennico Morricones hauntingly beautiful Gabriels Oboe, Karl Jenkins Palladio from the 1986 film Mission, theme from Schindlers List and many well known favourites.

Carpe Diem means "seize the day" in Latin and they endeavor to do just that with the exciting sound of strings.

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Alan Rhody

Alan RhodyAlan Rhody is the classic songwriter’s songwriter. In addition to 8 of his own albums (and several platinum and gold songs), his poignant ballads and gutsy rockers have also garnered over a hundred recordings by a long list of major artists in country, folk, and bluegrass  including Del McCoury, Lorrie Morgan, Murray McLauchlan, Kevin Welch, Hoyt Axton, The Oak Ridge Boys and Tanya Tucker.
